Intuit has announced that the end is near…
QuickBooks has long been known as an accounting software, and they boldly became a point of sale (POS) system as well. However, the reality is that QuickBooks has never been the right tool for the job of POS. In fact, the software has been clunky from the beginning, with many challenges when it comes to managing multiple locations, inventory, consolidating data, inter-location functionality, and reporting. While it’s admirable that they tried to create a solid solution, their roots in accounting versus retail left a lot of legwork on the shoulders of retail staff–especially when it comes to reporting and analytics.
Now that Intuit, the company behind QuickBooks, has announced that it will be sunsetting the software May 31, 2023, a lot of retailers are feeling left in a lurch. If you’re one of them, take a breath. The truth is that there are great options out there for POS, and we feel very confident that there’s likely a better fit for your business.
In terms of cloud-based POS systems, Square and Clover are popular choices. However, while they offer a good front-end experience, they don’t offer much in terms of back-end functionality.
For mid-tier businesses, there are options that are good at some things, but not others. It comes down to your unique needs and your growth plans.
For larger businesses, there are POS systems that offer everything you need, but they can be prohibitively expensive.
